“The Previews are the Best Part”
Every single time I go to the movies, I have to be early. Being late means that you missed the best part. The previews are what gives hope to the business in general. Some movies can be absolutely horrible, but the trailers were fantastic (Medellin). These are my favorite 12 trailers from the past 12 years.
12. Fast & Furious (2009) – Trailer 3
What makes this trailer great: C’mon.. Paul Walker and Vin Desiel teaming up again to the sound of Soulja Boy? I remember this trailer like it was yesterday. The movie kind of sucked, but it had me hooked, and started a franchise.
11. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: The absolutely haunting HP signature John Williams music in the beginning combined with the sheer adrenaline rush that this was the last movie. The HP movies were special. They had a ton of fantastic British actors and put together they made some special movies. Did David Yates use a little too much black and white lenses at random? Yes. Still a great trailer.
10. The Departed (2006) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: Seeing the cast, the director, the setting, and Dropkick Murphys. That’s really it.
9. Django Unchained (2012) – Trailer 2
What makes this trailer great: This trailer alone would be Jamie Foxx’s best performance other than Ray. The random Tarintino close up shots combined with crazy, funny Leo, as well as Waltz one-liners made this an amazing preview.
8. The Dark Knight (2008) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: Heath Ledger. Christopher Nolan. Christian Bale. Gary Oldman. Batman. Joker.
Eh… Probably just peak Hanz Zimmer.
7. The Force Awakens (2015) – Trailer 3
What makes this trailer great: Star Wars. Han Solo. Rey. Finn. Luke Skywalker. Vader. Kylo Ren. Chewy. C3PO. R2D2. Lightsabers. Jedi.
Eh… Probably just peak John Williams and nostalgia.
6. 12 Years a Slave (2012) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: The score alone is fantastic, but when Solomon gives his speech declaring he will stay strong.. “Until Freedom is oppertune,” I’m hooked.
5. Lords of Dogtown (2005) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: Heath Ledger bullying kids to the sound of Green Day is apparently exactly what I live for.
4. Les Miserables (2012) – International Trailer
What makes this trailer great: Les Mis has the best music of any of the 8 or 9 plays that I know of. Tom Hooper is also an excellent director. Put it together with an AMAZING cast and I’m ready to go watch Russell Crowe sing me to death for 4 hours.
3. Man of Steel (2013) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: This trailer is SO. DANG. GOOD. It literally took “The Bridge of Khazad Doom” song from The Fellowship of the Ring and combined it with a guy that actually can pull off Superman (no offense Brandon Routh) and a cast just as good as Les Mis. A Christopher Nolan name drop is all it took for the goosebumps to kick in. This trailer is amazing. Movie kind of sucked.
2. The Social Network (2010) – Trailer 1
What makes this trailer great: Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher. Geniuses. Absolute geniuses.
1. The Great Gatsby (2013) – Trailer 3
What makes this trailer great: So this trailer is basically the movie backwards. It also has 2 of the 3 best songs in the whole movie. Also Leo is playing Jay Gatsby. Also Tobey (my boy) is playing Nick Carraway. Also they’re best friends in real life. This is too cool already. Baz Luhrman is cool in my book. Honestly I just can’t watch this trailer without getting chills. It’s amazing. It’s #1.
